What Does the Name Itiel Mean?

Itiel is a Hebrew name meaning "God is with me." It comes from the biblical Hebrew name אִיתִיאֵל, long familiar in English Bibles as Ithiel. The name is built from two elements: itti (אִתִּי), meaning "with me," and El (אֵל), meaning "God." The spelling Itiel reflects modern Hebrew pronunciation, in which the letter tav is said as a plain t, whereas the older English form Ithiel preserves the th sound the same letter once had.

A less common explanation connects the first element to a Hebrew verb meaning "to come," which would give a sense such as "God has come." The "with me" reading is the one usually given, and the two-part structure itti + El is the basis for it.

Itiel Name History & Origins

The name appears in the Hebrew Bible as אִיתִיאֵל. In the book of Proverbs, the sayings of Agur son of Jakeh open with the words "to Ithiel, to Ithiel and Ucal" (Proverbs 30:1). Interpreters have disagreed about whether Ithiel and Ucal there are personal names, a place name, or something else, so that verse does not clearly identify a bearer of the name.

A clearer personal use comes in Nehemiah 11:7, where Ithiel son of Jeshaiah is listed among the people of Benjamin living in Jerusalem after the return from Babylonian exile. The name thus belongs to the biblical period and to the Hebrew-speaking community of that time.

The two spellings in use today reflect a change in pronunciation. English translations kept Ithiel, matching an earlier pronunciation in which the Hebrew letter tav was sounded as th. In modern Hebrew that letter is pronounced t, and transliterations into English and other European languages often write the name as Itiel. The Hebrew spelling itself is unchanged.
