What Does the Name Isidore Mean?

Isidore means "gift of Isis." It comes from the Greek name Isidōros (Ἰσίδωρος), a compound of Isis (Ἶσις), the Greek form of the Egyptian goddess's name, and dōron (δῶρον), "gift." The first element is an Egyptian divine name, but the compound was formed in Greek; Latin then adopted it as Isidorus.

The literal meaning is a theophoric one: the bearer is named as a gift associated with the goddess Isis. In Christian Europe the name kept that etymology, even though the goddess herself was no longer part of the religious setting. The shared Greek element dōron also appears in names such as Theodore, but Isidore's first element is specifically Isis. The feminine form is Isidora.

Isidore Name History & Origins

The Greek name Isidōros is found in the eastern Mediterranean in late antiquity. An early Christian bearer was Saint Isidore of Pelusium, an Egyptian monk and letter writer who died around 440. The name continued in Byzantine Greek and appears in Latin as Isidorus.

In the Latin West the most influential bearer was Saint Isidore of Seville (c. 560 - 636), archbishop and author of the Etymologiae. His works were widely copied, and the Latin form of his name was familiar to medieval scholars. From Latin the name passed into several European languages: Spanish and Portuguese Isidoro, Italian Isidoro, French Isidore, and English Isidore.

In Spain, Saint Isidore the Laborer (San Isidro Labrador, c. 1070 - 1130) was a Madrid farmworker who became a local saint; the Spanish form Isidro is associated with him. The French form Isidore was used in France and in French-speaking communities. English Isidore is a borrowing from French and Latin.
