What Does the Name Ishana Mean?

Ishana is a Sanskrit name meaning "lord," "ruler," or "master." It comes from the Sanskrit word īśāna, which is formed from īśa ("lord, master, possessor") with the suffix -āna. In Sanskrit, īśāna serves as both an adjective, "ruling, commanding, possessing," and a noun, "ruler, lord," so the literal sense is closer to "one who rules or owns" than to a fixed title.

Because the word is a descriptive title as much as a name, it is applied to more than one deity. It is used as an epithet of Shiva, and it also appears among the thousand names of Vishnu in the Vishnu Sahasranama. Which "lord" is meant depends on the text and context rather than on the word itself.

Ishana Name History & Origins

Īśāna is an old Sanskrit epithet of Rudra, the Vedic god who was later identified with Shiva. In the Shri Rudram of the Yajurveda, Rudra is addressed with the salutation nama īśānāya ("obeisance to Ishana"), and Ishana is counted among the eleven Rudras of later lists. From this Vedic use, the name passed into the broader Sanskrit tradition as a standard designation for Shiva.

In Puranic and temple usage, Ishana became the guardian of the northeast, one of the eight lords of the directions. The Sanskrit word for the northeast, īśānya ("belonging to Ishana"), derives from his name, and the northeastern corner of a temple or house is still called the Ishana corner in Vastu planning. In the Shaiva Siddhanta tradition, Ishana is also named as one of the five faces of Shiva.

The name also appears outside Hindu scripture. In some Buddhist texts, Īśāna is one of the guardians of the directions. In Jain cosmology, Īśāna is the name of one of the heavens of the upper world, and its presiding lord carries the same name.

As a modern given name, Ishana is used in India, Nepal, and other South Asian communities. It is given to boys in most usage and also to girls. Related forms built on the same root īśa include the masculine Ishan and Ishaan and the feminine Ishani.
