What Does the Name Inigo Mean?

Inigo is the English spelling of Íñigo, a Basque and Spanish given name. It is conventionally treated as the Basque counterpart of the Latin name Ignatius, but the two names appear to have separate roots. Ignatius comes from the Roman family name Egnatius, whose meaning is uncertain and sometimes thought to be Etruscan; a later, unproven explanation traced it to Latin ignis, "fire." The older Basque name Eneko, of unknown meaning, is often seen as the form behind Íñigo, though the exact relationship between the two is not fully clear.

Inigo Name History & Origins

Íñigo is recorded in the medieval Basque lands and the kingdom of Navarre. Eneko Aritza, known in Spanish as Íñigo Arista, was the first king of Pamplona in the ninth century. In Castile, Saint Íñigo of Oña, a Benedictine abbot who died in 1057, was long venerated and helped keep the name in use.

Íñigo López de Loyola (1491 - 1556) was born at Loyola castle in Gipuzkoa and baptized Íñigo. He later adopted the Latin form Ignatius and founded the Society of Jesus. From his time onward the two names have been closely linked, and Íñigo has often served in Basque-speaking regions as the local form of Ignatius.

In England the spelling Inigo appears by the late sixteenth century, borne by the architect Inigo Jones (1573 - 1652). In modern English the name also appears in the fictional swordsman Inigo Montoya of William Goldman's novel The Princess Bride (1973) and its 1987 film adaptation.
