What Does the Name Indy Mean?

Indy is a shortened pet form of longer names rather than a name with an etymology of its own, so its meaning depends on which longer name it stands for. In English it most often shortens Indiana, India, Indira, or Indigo, each of which has its own separate origin. There is no single literal translation for Indy itself, and it should not be confused with indie, the short form of "independent."

Indiana was formed in American English from Indian plus the Latin-style ending -a, meaning "land of the Indians"; it was adopted for the territory organized in 1800 and the state admitted in 1816. India comes through Greek Indos and Old Persian Hindu from Sanskrit sindhu, "river," a name for the Indus. Because the English word Indian traces back through Greek and Latin to that same river name, Indiana and India share a distant root. Indira is Sanskrit and is conventionally connected with the god Indra; it is usually glossed "beauty" or "splendid," and in Hindu tradition it is also a name of Indra's wife. Indigo comes from Greek indikon, "Indian dye," a reference to where the dye was obtained.

Indy Name History & Origins

Indy spread first as a spoken short form rather than as a name written on a record. In American English it became the everyday nickname of Indianapolis, and the 500-mile automobile race held there since 1911 is commonly called the Indy 500; that usage fixed the clipped form in ordinary speech as a place nickname.

As a personal name, Indy follows the common English habit of clipping a longer name and adding -y: Indiana and Indira both yield Indy, and the same ending turns Indigo into Indy. The name also appears in Dutch usage, where it suits the Dutch pattern of diminutives ending in -ie or -y. In English-speaking countries it is given to both girls and boys.

The best-known fictional bearer is the archaeologist Henry Walton "Indiana" Jones, called Indy in the films beginning with Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. The series made the nickname widely recognizable, but it did not create the word. The films' own explanation, that the character borrowed the name from a dog, is a story detail and not a record of the name's origin.

Indy and indie sound alike but are unrelated: indie is a clipping of "independent," used for independent music and film, while Indy comes from names beginning with Ind-.
