What Does the Name Inara Mean?
Inara is most often explained as a feminine Arabic name meaning "ray of light" or "illumination." It comes from the Arabic noun ināra (إنارة), the verbal noun for "illumination, lighting," formed on the root n-w-r - the same root that gives nūr (نور), "light." The literal sense is the act or result of giving light, and "ray of light" is a customary, more poetic rendering of that idea rather than a word-for-word translation. In a separate line of tradition, Inara is also the name of a goddess in Hittite mythology; that figure has its own origin and is not a development of the Arabic word. Because the Hittite name's original sense is not known, only the Arabic meaning is given here.
Inara Name History & Origins
The Arabic feminine name Inara belongs to the same root as the everyday Arabic word for light, nūr, and the related verb for illuminating. Names built on this root are traditional in Arabic-speaking communities, where light is a common image in both daily speech and religious language.
In Hittite religion, Inara was a goddess who appears in the myth of Illuyanka, a combat myth in which she helps the storm-god overcome the dragon. She is associated with a town called Tarukka and was later identified in Hittite texts with the Hurrian and Mesopotamian goddess known as Šauška. This mythological Inara is recorded in cuneiform tablets from the second millennium BCE, long before the modern given name, and the two names are alike in spelling rather than in descent.
In the modern period the name is also used in English-speaking countries. A widely known fictional use is the character Inara Serra in the television series Firefly (2002) and the film Serenity (2005); this is a literary association, not the source of the name's meaning.
