What Does the Name Ilah Mean?

Ilah comes from the Arabic word ilāh (إله), which means "god" or "deity." It is a common noun for any god or object of worship, not the name of one particular god. With the definite article it becomes al-ilāh, "the god," which contracted into Allah. The same Semitic word for divinity lies behind Hebrew el (אֵל) and elohim (אֱלֹהִים) and Aramaic elāh (אֱלָהּ).

Used as a girl's name, Ilah is generally read as "deity"; the grammatically feminine Arabic form ilāhah (إلهة) means "goddess." The spelling should not be confused with the Hebrew name Elah, a different word meaning "terebinth" (a tree), even though the two look nearly identical in English letters.

Ilah Name History & Origins

The noun ilāh is an old Semitic word for a god, and its shortened definite form Allah was already in use in Arabia before Islam. The Prophet Muhammad's father was named ʿAbd Allāh, "servant of God," and the element Allah appears in pre-Islamic Arabian inscriptions. Because Arabic uses the word both as a common noun and as a term for the one God, Ilah has served as a given name in Arabic-speaking and other Muslim communities, where it is understood as "deity."

The Hebrew Bible contains a similar-looking name, Elah (אֵלָה), meaning "terebinth," a tree of the eastern Mediterranean. It belongs to Elah son of Baasha, the last king of the northern kingdom of Israel (1 Kings 16), and to a few lesser figures in the genealogies of Judah and Edom. That Hebrew name comes from the tree word rather than from the Semitic root for "god," so the resemblance in English spelling is coincidental.
