What Does the Name Icela Mean?
Icela is a feminine given name used in Spanish-speaking communities. Its meaning is uncertain because it is usually treated as a variant of Isela, and Isela itself has more than one proposed origin. One common explanation derives Isela from Isabel, the Spanish form of Elizabeth, which comes from the Hebrew name Elisheva. Elisheva is often interpreted as "my God is an oath" or "God is my oath," from El, "God," and a second element related to shvuah, "oath." Another explanation links Isela, and therefore Icela, to Gisela, a Germanic name formed from gisil, "pledge" or "hostage"; on that view the meaning would be "pledge." The available evidence does not settle which derivation lies behind Icela.
Icela Name History & Origins
Because Icela is usually identified with Isela, its history is tied to that of Isela and, through it, to Isabel. Isabel developed in medieval Spain from an Occitan form of Elizabeth; the name entered Christian Europe through the biblical Elizabeth, the mother of John the Baptist. From Spain and Portugal, Isabel spread across Latin America, and shorter forms such as Isa and Chabela came into use; Isela is often linked to this family as well. The spelling Icela is sometimes treated as an alternate way to write Isela. In Spanish, c before e has the same /s/ sound as s in Latin American Spanish, while in much of Spain it represents the /θ/ sound. If the alternative link to Gisela is accepted, Icela would instead belong to the Germanic group of names that includes Gisela and Giselle, but that derivation is not firmly established.
