What Does the Name Holston Mean?
Holston is an English surname, and its use as a given name is mainly a transferred use of that surname. The name is topographic in type: it appears to join the Old English elements hol, meaning "hollow," "hole," or "hollow place," and stān, meaning "stone." Taken literally, it would describe someone who lived near a hollowed stone, a rock shelter, or a rocky hollow - the kind of local landmark that medieval English bynames were built from.
Because the surname is uncommon and early spellings vary, the derivation is not firmly settled. Some occurrences may instead go back to a minor or now-lost place name rather than to a simple two-element description, and a few families may have reshaped an unrelated name into Holston over time. The literal sense, "hollow stone," is the one most often given, but it should be treated as the probable meaning rather than a fully documented one.
Holston Name History & Origins
Holston began as an English surname. English hereditary surnames developed in the later Middle Ages, and a large group of them were taken from the landscape - a hill, a stream, a distinctive stone - near the first bearer's home. Holston belongs to that group. The name has been established in England since at least the early modern period, and English-speaking emigrants carried it to North America.
In North America the name is best known geographically. The Holston River, which runs through southwestern Virginia into eastern Tennessee, is named for Stephen Holston, a frontier explorer and settler of the 18th century who is credited with exploring the river in the 1740s. The river in turn gave its name to the Holston settlements and forts of the colonial backcountry, which kept the surname familiar in that region.
As a first name, Holston is uncommon and largely American, following the general pattern of surnames adopted as given names. Its use has been concentrated in the areas where the surname and the river name are known, rather than in Britain, where it remains overwhelmingly a family name.
