What Does the Name Heru Mean?

Heru is the conventional Egyptological form of the ancient Egyptian name of the falcon god known in English as Horus. It is written in Egyptian as Ḥr (often transcribed Ḥrw), and its customary meaning is given as "the distant one" or "the one on high," describing the far-flying falcon and the sky. Because Egyptian writing recorded consonants rather than vowels, the ancient vowels are not known, and Heru is a modern vocalization used for reading purposes. The derivation is not fully settled: the usual explanation links the name to the idea of the god being distant or above, while other suggestions connect it with the Egyptian word ḥr, "face," or with the preposition ḥr, "upon." The Greek form of the name is Ὧρος (Hōros), the source of English Horus, and the later Coptic form is Hōr.

Heru Name History & Origins

The name belongs to one of the oldest deities attested in Egyptian records. A "Horus name" was one of the five traditional titles of the pharaoh, written inside a rectangular serekh topped by a falcon, and it appears in the titulary of First Dynasty rulers such as Narmer and Aha, placing the god Heru in close association with kingship by roughly 3100 BCE. In Egyptian myth, Horus is the son of Osiris and Isis who avenges his father and contends with Set for the throne, a story preserved in texts such as the Contendings of Horus and Set.

The name also occurs in several compound forms. Heru-ur ("Horus the Great," often called Horus the Elder) names a separate, older falcon god. Heru-pa-khered ("Horus the Child") was rendered in Greek as Harpocrates, and Ḥr-sȝ-Ỉst ("Horus son of Isis") became Harsiesis. Through the Greek Ὧρος and Latin Horus, the name entered the modern European languages; the spelling Heru is used today in English writing about ancient Egypt and is also found as a modern given name.
