What Does the Name Hermione Mean?

Hermione is a feminine name of ancient Greek origin, written Ἑρμιόνη (Hermionē). It is traditionally connected with Hermes, the Greek god of travel, boundaries, and messages, and its customary meaning is "messenger." The literal etymology is less certain: the name of Hermes may come from Greek herma, a cairn or boundary stone, while the link to hermēneus, "interpreter," is often regarded as a later association rather than a direct root. For Hermione, "messenger" is therefore a conventional gloss based on Hermes's role, not a securely literal translation.

Hermione Name History & Origins

In Greek myth and literature, Hermione is the daughter of Menelaus and Helen of Sparta. Homer's Odyssey says she was given in marriage to Neoptolemus, the son of Achilles. Euripides' Andromache makes her Neoptolemus's wife and shows her in conflict with the captive Andromache; other versions of the story connect her instead with Orestes, to whom she had been betrothed as a child. A city in Argolis also bore the name Hermione and was home to a sanctuary of Demeter Chthonia; whether the city name and the personal name come from the same source is uncertain.

The name passed into Latin as Hermione and appears in later European writing. Shakespeare gave the name to Queen Hermione in The Winter's Tale (c. 1610 - 11), a woman wrongly accused by her husband, King Leontes. The name also appears in J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter novels (1997 - 2007) as Hermione Granger, a use that is much more recent than the Greek and Shakespearean ones.
