What Does the Name Hashim Mean?

Hashim is an Arabic masculine name meaning "breaker of bread." It comes from the Arabic hāshim (هاشم), the active participle of hashama, "to break, crush, or shatter." Literally, hāshim can mean "breaker" or "crusher," but the customary sense comes from the traditional explanation that ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Manāf was called Hāshim because he broke bread into broth to feed pilgrims in Mecca. The name is separate from Hebrew Hashem (הַשֵּׁם, "the Name"), a reverent substitute for the divine name, even though the English spellings can look alike.

Hashim Name History & Origins

The name Hashim is associated with ʿAmr ibn ʿAbd Manāf, a pre-Islamic leader of the Quraysh in Mecca. Traditional Arabic accounts explain his nickname through his relief efforts during a famine, and the nickname became the name by which he was known. His descendants formed the Banū Hāshim, the clan to which the Prophet Muhammad belonged. Because of that clan, the name is tied to Islamic history, and the sharifian lines of Mecca and the modern Hashemite dynasty of Jordan trace their descent from him. In Arabic-speaking and Muslim communities, Hashim is used as a given name; in Arabic contexts the spelling Hashem also occurs.
