What Does the Name Harith Mean?

Harith is an Arabic name meaning "cultivator" or "tiller of the soil." It comes from the root ḥ-r-th (ح ر ث), "to plough, to till, to cultivate." Ḥārith is the active participle of that root, so its literal sense is "one who ploughs or tills."

The same root yields ḥarth, "crop, tilth, harvest," which the Quran uses figuratively for what a person reaps in the Hereafter (42:20). From the related verb iḥtaratha, "to earn or acquire," Arabic lexicographers also give the sense "earner." Separately, al-Ḥārith is listed in Arabic dictionaries as one of the traditional names for the lion - a customary lexical usage rather than the name's basic meaning.

A similar-sounding Sanskrit name, Harit, means "green" and has a separate origin; it should not be confused with the Arabic name.

Harith Name History & Origins

Harith is a pre-Islamic Arabic name, borne by rulers and poets before the rise of Islam. The Nabataean kings used it: the Nabataean form ḥrtt was written in Greek as Aretas, the name of several Nabataean rulers, including Aretas IV, who reigned from roughly 9 BC to AD 40. The Ghassanid Arab kings of sixth-century Syria, allies of Byzantium, also used it, most famously al-Harith ibn Jabala, known as al-A'raj.

In Arabic poetry the name belongs to al-Harith ibn Hilliza, a pre-Islamic poet whose ode is counted among the Mu'allaqat. In Muhammad's family, al-Harith was a son of Abd al-Muttalib and therefore an uncle of the Prophet. A report preserved in the hadith collections ranks al-Harith and Hammam among the "truest" of names.

The name continued in later Islamic scholarly circles; al-Harith ibn Asad al-Muhasibi was a ninth-century Sufi teacher in Baghdad. It is still a common given name in Arabic-speaking countries and among Muslims in South Asia and Southeast Asia, usually written Harith or Hareth in Latin letters. The feminine form is Haritha.
