The word appears in the Quran, where God says of John the Baptist, wa ḥanānan min ladunnā, "and tenderness from Us" (Surah Maryam 19:13). As a given name it is used mainly for women in Arabic.

Among the men who bear it are a Benjaminite in the genealogy of 1 Chronicles 8:23; one of David's warriors in 1 Chronicles 11:43; a Levite who helped explain the Law to the people in Nehemiah 8:7; a temple treasurer appointed by Nehemiah (Nehemiah 13:13); and Hanan son of Igdaliah, called "the man of God" in Jeremiah 35:4, in whose temple chamber the Rechabites were tested with wine. The standalone name is sometimes understood as a short form of a longer name built on the same root, such as Hananiah. It is still given in Israel, mostly to boys, and is spelled Hanan there.
