What Does the Name Halsey Mean?

Halsey is an English surname used as a given name. It comes from a place or topographic name formed from the Old English elements heals, "neck" (frequently a neck, ridge, or bend of land), and ēg, "island" (also dry ground in a marsh). Read literally, this gives "island in a neck of land." A competing explanation derives it from the Old Norse byname Hálsi ("neck"), so that the place name behind the surname would mean "Hálsi's island" - that is, an island or patch of land held by or named for a man called Hálsi. The two explanations are not fully reconciled, and the topographic reading is the more commonly given one.

Halsey is not related to similar-looking names such as Halstead, Halsall, or Haley, which have their own separate derivations. Its English origin should also be kept distinct from the countries and languages that later adopted it, chiefly the United States.

Halsey Name History & Origins

The surname Halsey appears in England in the medieval period, when inherited family names were becoming fixed and were often taken from a village, a manor, or a local feature of the landscape. Recorded spellings in English documents include Halsie and Halsy alongside Halsey. The name is found mainly in southern England.

One branch of the family left England for North America in the 17th century; Thomas Halsey was among the settlers of Southampton on Long Island, New York, in 1640. Surnames of this type only gradually moved into the given-name position, and Halsey has been used as a first name in the United States - historically more often for boys, and in modern use more often for girls. A well-known bearer was Admiral William F. Halsey Jr., who commanded the U.S. Third Fleet in the Pacific during World War II. The pop singer Ashley Frangipane performs under the stage name Halsey.
