What Does the Name Haddon Mean?
Haddon is an English habitational name, usually explained as "heath-covered hill" or "hill covered with heath." It comes from Old English hǣð "heath" and dūn "hill." The name was originally a place name for more than one English village, and the surname Haddon is derived from those places. A competing explanation for some Haddon place names derives the first element from Old English hād "condition, rank, state," but the heath-and-hill sense is the usual one. As a personal name, Haddon is a transferred use of the surname, so its meaning is the same as the place-name meaning rather than a distinct given-name etymology.
Haddon Name History & Origins
The English villages called Haddon include Haddon in Derbyshire, Haddon in Cambridgeshire, and East and West Haddon in Northamptonshire. Their names belong to a common Old English type formed with dūn "hill." The reconstructed Old English form behind them would have been something like Hǣðdūn, which in Middle English developed into Haddon. From these places came the surname Haddon, which appears in medieval England as a hereditary family name. The Derbyshire village is the site of Haddon Hall, a medieval manor house.
Haddon began to be used occasionally as a first name through the English surname tradition. It remains uncommon as a given name. Haddon Sundblom (1899 - 1976), an American illustrator known for his Coca-Cola Santa Claus paintings, is a notable bearer.
