What Does the Name Hadara Mean?

Hadara is a feminine Hebrew name meaning "splendor" or "glory." It is built on the Hebrew root h-d-r (הדר), whose basic sense is splendor, majesty, and adornment. The bare stem hadar (הָדָר) is the form used as a masculine or unisex name, while hadarah (הֲדָרָה) is the feminine noun; the given name Hadara follows that feminine pattern rather than being a separate word.

The root appears in biblical Hebrew in fixed phrases. Psalm 8 says God crowned humanity with hod ve-hadar, "glory and splendor," and Psalm 104 opens with God clothed in hod ve-hadar. Proverbs 31:25 describes the woman of valor with oz ve-hadar levushah, "strength and splendor are her clothing." In Leviticus 23:40 the citron used on Sukkot is called pri hadar, "fruit of a beautiful tree," and in later Hebrew hadar became the everyday word for the citron itself. The same root yields hiddur, as in hiddur mitzvah, the practice of beautifying a commandment. These are literal senses of the Hebrew word, not symbolic meanings added later.

The similar-sounding Arabic noun ḥaḍāra ("civilization") comes from a different root and is not related; the resemblance is coincidental.

Hadara Name History & Origins

The masculine form Hadar is an old Hebrew name. Genesis 36:39 lists Hadar as a king of Edom, a passage where some manuscripts read Hadad instead. The feminine Hadara adds the ending -a, the ordinary Hebrew way of forming a feminine noun or name from the same root, so the name reads to Hebrew speakers as a plain Hebrew word rather than as a borrowed or invented coinage.

Names formed this way from biblical and liturgical vocabulary became common as Hebrew was revived for everyday speech and naming from the late nineteenth century onward, and Hadara belongs to that layer of Hebrew naming rather than to an ancient onomastic tradition. The same noun also underlies Israeli place names, such as the Hadar HaCarmel neighborhood of Haifa, which reflects the word's general sense and not the personal name.

The name is current mainly among Hebrew-speaking Jews; outside that setting it is usually encountered as a Hebrew name rather than through a widely known literary character, saint, or royal figure.
