What Does the Name Gyda Mean?

Gyda is a Scandinavian feminine name from the Old Norse Gýða. It is usually explained as a short form of names beginning with the Old Norse element guð, meaning "god," such as Guðrún and Guðríðr. A less certain explanation connects it with Old Norse gyðja, "goddess" or "priestess"; if that is the source, the literal sense would be "goddess."

Gyda Name History & Origins

The Old Norse name Gýða is documented in medieval Scandinavia. In the 11th century it was borne by Gytha Thorkelsdóttir, a Danish noblewoman who married Godwin, Earl of Wessex, and became the mother of Harold Godwinson, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England. English histories normally spell her name Gytha, and that form also appears in England during the period of Danish settlement and rule.

In Old Norse tradition, Gyda is also the name of a woman in accounts of Harald Fairhair. The 13th-century Heimskringla tells how Harald sought Gyda, daughter of a king in Norway, and vowed not to cut his hair until he had won her and unified Norway. This is a traditional saga narrative, not a contemporary record, and its details are literary rather than documentary.

Modern Gyda is chiefly a Danish and Norwegian spelling. It continues the medieval Scandinavian name, while English texts often keep the older English rendering Gytha for the same historical figure.
