What Does the Name Gitty Mean?
Gitty is a Yiddish name, usually treated as an affectionate form of Gittel (also spelled Gitel or Gita). Its base is the German and Yiddish word gut, meaning "good," so the literal sense of the name is "good" or "good one." The -y ending is a familiar, diminutive form of the kind Yiddish and later English speech adds to names. Gitty is not related to the Sanskrit name Gita, which means "song."
Gitty Name History & Origins
Gitty belongs to the Yiddish-speaking Ashkenazi world of Central and Eastern Europe. Its parent name, Gittel, is found among Jewish women in German- and Yiddish-speaking lands, and the closely related form Gute also appears, where the connection to gut ("good") is plainer. The -el element in Gittel is generally understood as an endearing or diminutive ending, though its exact force is not fully documented. Gitty began as the informal, spoken shortening of Gittel used within families and communities, and it has also been given as a name in its own right. It is used today mainly in Orthodox and Hasidic Jewish communities in the United States, Israel, and the United Kingdom.
