What Does the Name Gigi Mean?
Gigi is a French diminutive or pet form. It does not have a single lexical meaning of its own; its meaning depends on the longer name it stands for. Among the full names it shortens are Georgine or Georgina and Virginie or Virginia. Georgina derives from Greek georgos, 'farmer' or 'earthworker,' formed from ge, 'earth,' and ergon, 'work,' through Latin Georgius and French Georges. Virginia is traditionally linked to Latin virgo, virginis, 'maiden' or 'virgin.' Gigi is also used for other French feminine names beginning with G, but those do not give it a separate fixed meaning. The literal meanings belong to the full names; Gigi itself is an affectionate short form.
Gigi Name History & Origins
Gigi developed in French as an affectionate pet form. It follows a common French pattern of repeating sounds to make nursery-style nicknames, as in Mimi from Marie or Nana from Anne. It was not tied to one full name; French speakers have used it for feminine names beginning with G, including Georgine, Virginie, and Gilberte. In French, the letter G before i has a zh sound, as in the English word 'measure,' so the French pronunciation is ZHEE-zhee. English speakers generally say JEE-jee.
The nickname is widely known in English through Colette's 1944 novella Gigi. The title character is called Gigi, but her full name is Gilberte. The story was adapted into a 1958 film and later a stage musical. This literary use is a famous association, not the origin of the name; Gigi was already a French pet form. In English, Gigi is also used as an independent given name, and it can stand for Georgina, Virginia, or other G-names.
