What Does the Name Gayatri Mean?
Gayatri comes from Sanskrit gāyatrī, a feminine noun formed from gāyatra, "song" or "hymn," which derives from the root gā, "to sing." Its core meaning is therefore "song" or "hymn." In Sanskrit the word also names a particular poetic meter, and it is used for the best-known verse composed in that meter. A traditional gloss reads the word as gāyantam trāyate, "she who protects the one who sings," but this is a later symbolic explanation rather than the word's literal etymology, and the two should not be confused.
Gayatri Name History & Origins
The Gayatri is a Vedic meter of twenty-four syllables, arranged in three lines of eight. It appears throughout the Rigveda, where a large number of hymns are composed in it, and it remained a standard meter in later Sanskrit poetry. The verse known as the Gayatri mantra, addressed to the sun deity Savitr, is the most widely recited Vedic prayer; tradition attributes it to the sage Vishvamitra, and it is repeated in daily sandhya worship and at the upanayana, or sacred-thread, ceremony.
In later Hindu tradition the mantra was personified as the goddess Gayatri, who is described in some texts as a consort of Brahma and as a mother of the Vedas, and who is also associated with Saraswati. The same word continued to serve as the technical name of the meter in classical Sanskrit prosody. As a given name, Gayatri is used mainly in India and among Indian communities elsewhere, most often for girls, and it draws on both the meter and the goddess for its associations.
