What Does the Name Freyr Mean?
Freyr is an Old Norse name meaning "lord." It comes from Proto-Germanic *frawjô, a word for a lord or master that appears across the Germanic languages: Gothic frauja, Old English frēa, Old Saxon frō, and Old High German frō all carry the sense "lord."
The deeper origin of *frawjô is not settled. One suggestion links it to a root meaning "forward" or "first" (as in Latin prō), which would give an original sense like "the one in front" or "leader." Other explanations have been offered, and no single derivation is universally accepted.
In Norse myth the name is used for a particular god, and the related goddess name Freyja comes from a parallel feminine form, *frawjōn, meaning "lady." The literal sense of Freyr is a title, "lord"; ideas such as fertility and prosperity belong to the god's role in the myths, not to the word's etymology.
Freyr Name History & Origins
Freyr is best known as a god in Norse mythology, one of the Vanir, the son of Njörðr and the twin brother of Freyja. Old Norse poetry and prose describe him as a god of good harvests, peace, and wealth. He appears in poems of the Poetic Edda such as Skírnismál, Grímnismál, Lokasenna, and Völuspá, and in Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda. In these sources he also bears the names Yngvi, Ing, and Yngvi-Freyr.
Tradition connected Freyr with Uppsala in Sweden and with the Yngling dynasty, whose kings were said to descend from him; the Ynglinga saga in Heimskringla gives this account. Place names in Sweden such as Frösön point to sites of his worship, and the same name element appears in other Scandinavian place names.
As a personal name, Freyr is used today mainly in Iceland. Related forms such as Frej (Sweden, Denmark) and Frey are used elsewhere in Scandinavia, and Frö is an older Swedish form of the god's name. In the medieval sources the word appears primarily as the name of the god, and its use as a modern given name reflects later interest in Norse myth.
