What Does the Name Fin Mean?

Fin is used both as a short form and as an independent given name, and it comes from two unrelated sources. The Irish source is Old Irish find, later fionn, meaning "fair," "white," or "bright" - at first a byname for someone fair-haired or pale. The personal name Fionn is the direct ancestor of the anglicized forms Finn and Fin, and the same element appears in the longer names Fionnlagh (Anglicized as Finlay) and Fionnagán (Anglicized as Finnegan), for which Fin is also a shortening.

The second source is Old Norse Finnr, a byname meaning "Sámi" or "person from the far north." It is not related to the Irish name, even though both are shortened to the same spelling in modern use.

Fin Name History & Origins

In Ireland, Fionn was a descriptive byname before it became a fixed personal name. It is best known from the Fenian Cycle of Irish legend, in which Fionn mac Cumhaill leads the warrior band called the Fianna; these stories were written down from the medieval period onward. As English replaced Irish in many records, Fionn and its longer relatives were written as Finn or Fin. Fin then passed into use as a name in its own right as well as a familiar shortening of Finlay and Finnegan.

In Scandinavia, Finnr is recorded as a personal name in medieval Danish and Norwegian sources, and it continues in use there as Finn, with Fin as a shorter spelling. Its original sense is usually taken to be "Sámi" or "northerner," but the older etymology of the root is uncertain; one proposal links it to a Germanic word for "wanderer," which is not firmly established.
