What Does the Name Feras Mean?

Feras is an Arabic name meaning "lion." It comes from the Arabic word firās (فراس), a classical term for a lion, and more precisely for a lion that hunts and kills its prey. The word belongs to the root ف-ر-س, whose verb farasa means "to crush" or "to break the neck" of prey, and whose noun farīsa means "prey."

The same root also yields faras ("horse") and fāris ("horseman, knight"), but the name corresponds to firās, the lion, not to fāris; "knight" is a different word and a different meaning. In Arabic usage the name carries the added sense of boldness, which is a natural reading of the lion image rather than a separate etymology.

Feras Name History & Origins

Feras is a traditional Arab given name, written فراس in Arabic and rendered in Latin letters as Feras, Firas, or Ferras. It belongs to the old Arabic stock of personal names taken from animals and the natural world, in this case from a word for the lion, and it appears in Arabic poetry and tribal genealogies from the early Islamic period onward.

A well-known early bearer of the name in kunya form was Abu Firas al-Hamdani (died 968), the poet-prince of the Hamdanid dynasty and cousin of Sayf al-Dawla, whose verse is among the most quoted in classical Arabic. His personal name was al-Harith, and Abu Firas was his kunya, so he shows the name in use without being named Feras at birth.

The name is used today in the Levant, Iraq, the Arabian Peninsula, and North Africa, among both Muslim and Christian Arabic-speaking communities, and has spread with Arabic-speaking emigration. Because Arabic short vowels are usually left unwritten, Latin-script spellings vary (Feras, Firas, Ferras), and an English speaker encountering the name may pronounce it either with a long first vowel or a short one.
