What Does the Name Fawn Mean?
Fawn is an English word name taken from the everyday English noun for a young deer. That noun comes from Old French faon ("young animal, young deer"), which descends from Vulgar Latin fetonem, from Latin fetus, "offspring" or "young one" - the same Latin word behind the modern term fetus. The literal sense of the name is therefore "young deer," and that is the meaning normally given. Ideas such as gentleness or shyness are later associations with the animal, not part of the etymology.
The English verb fawn, meaning to flatter or act servilely, is a different word with a different origin, from Old English fagnian ("to rejoice"). It is unrelated to the animal noun and has no bearing on the name. The color word fawn, a pale yellowish brown, was formed from the animal noun.
Fawn Name History & Origins
Fawn is a modern given name rather than an inherited one: it was taken directly from the vocabulary word, not shortened or translated from an older personal name, and it has no classical or medieval ancestry as a name. Its use as a personal name belongs to the period when English-speaking families increasingly chose word names from nature - flowers, birds, and animals - for girls.
Among people who have borne the name are the American historian Fawn McKay Brodie (1915 - 1981), whose biographies included studies of Thomas Jefferson and Richard Nixon, and Fawn Hall, a secretary whose testimony figured in the Iran-Contra congressional hearings of 1987. The name also appears in modern fiction, including the animal fairy Fawn in the Disney Fairies stories. A less common spelling is Fawne.
