What Does the Name Ezechiel Mean?
Ezechiel is a form of the biblical Hebrew name Yeḥezqel (יְחֶזְקֵאל), commonly translated as "God strengthens." It is built from two elements: the verb ḥāzaq, meaning "to be strong" or "to strengthen," and ʾēl, the standard Hebrew word for God. Read literally, the name can be taken either as a statement about God or as a wish - "God strengthens" or "may God strengthen" - and the precise force of the verb form is not certain.
The initial E in Ezechiel reflects the Greek Iezekiēl (Ἰεζεκιήλ) and the Latin Ezechiel of the Vulgate rather than a direct transliteration of the Hebrew. The English spelling Ezekiel represents the same name by a different route. The two spellings are variants of a single name, not separate names with independent origins.
Ezechiel Name History & Origins
The name is best known from the prophet Ezekiel, a priest among the Judeans deported to Babylonia after 597 BCE, whose visions and oracles make up the Book of Ezekiel in the Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew text of that book uses the form Yeḥezqel. The same Hebrew name appears in another biblical setting as well: 1 Chronicles 24:16 lists a priest named Yeḥezqel among the heads of the priestly divisions.
When the Hebrew scriptures were translated into Greek, the name took the form Iezekiēl (Ἰεζεκιήλ); the Latin Bible, including Jerome's Vulgate, rendered it Ezechiel. From Latin the name passed into the Christian languages of Europe, and the E- spelling remains standard in German and Polish (Ezechiel), French (Ézéchiel), and Czech and Slovak. In English, the H-based spelling Ezekiel became the usual form, while Ezechiel persists as a less common variant.
