What Does the Name Evely Mean?

Evely is a rare feminine name, generally taken to be a variant spelling of Evelyn or of the closely related Evelin, so its meaning depends on theirs. Evelyn is an English name that grew out of the surname Evelyn, which came from the Norman French feminine given name Aveline. The ultimate origin of Aveline is not settled. It is commonly explained as a diminutive formed from Ava, a Germanic name of uncertain meaning often interpreted as "desired" or "wished for." Since that derivation is itself disputed, the literal meaning of Evely is best described as uncertain.

A second explanation ties Evelyn and Evelin to Evelina, a name built from Eve (Hebrew Hawwah), which is associated with the idea of life or living. That would give a different meaning again. The two explanations are not securely reconciled, and no separate etymology exists for the spelling Evely itself.

Evely Name History & Origins

The name behind Evely came to England with the Normans. Aveline, a feminine name brought from France, was used in medieval England and gave rise to the surname Evelyn. That surname is documented in England in the medieval and early modern periods, and it began to be used as a masculine given name in the seventeenth century; the diarist John Evelyn (1620 - 1706) is the best-known early bearer. Over the following centuries the given name shifted toward women, and by the twentieth century Evelyn was overwhelmingly feminine in English-speaking countries.

Evely sits within the same family of spellings as Evelyn, Evelin, Eveline, and Evelina, but it is far less common than any of them. The shorter -ly ending also occurs in continental European usage: the similar forms Evelin and Eveli are established feminine names in Estonian, and Evelin is used in several other European languages as well. From the spelling alone it is not possible to tell whether a particular Evely is meant as a shortened form of Evelyn or as a form of Evelin or Eveli.
