What Does the Name Eve Mean?
Eve is the English form of the Hebrew name Ḥawwah (חַוָּה), the name of the first woman in the book of Genesis. It is traditionally explained as meaning "living one" or "life," from the Hebrew root ḥ-y-h, "to live." Genesis itself draws that connection, saying Adam named her Eve "because she was the mother of all living" (Genesis 3:20) - a wordplay rather than a formal etymology. A few scholars have proposed a link to a Semitic word for "serpent," but that is not the accepted explanation, and the exact origin of the Hebrew name remains uncertain.
The Hebrew name reached English indirectly: the Greek Septuagint renders it Εὔα (Heua), the Latin Vulgate uses Eva, and Old French passed Eve into Middle English. The English spelling happens to match the unrelated common noun eve ("evening"), which comes from Old English ǣfen; the two words have no shared origin.
Eve Name History & Origins
Eve appears in Genesis as the wife of Adam and the mother of Cain, Abel, and Seth. The Hebrew form חַוָּה (Ḥawwah) is still used in modern Hebrew, usually spelled Chava in English. Because the biblical text was translated into many languages, distinct forms of the name developed in each: Eva in Latin and most European languages, Hawwa' (حواء) in Arabic, and Eve in English by way of Old French.
In medieval England the name was used in both the Latin-influenced form Eva and the French-derived Eve, and it remained in use in England after the Reformation. The name also appears in the New Testament, where Paul refers to Eve in 2 Corinthians 11:3 and 1 Timothy 2:13.
