What Does the Name Evander Mean?
Evander is a masculine name taken from the Greek Εὔανδρος (Euandros), a compound of eu, meaning "good" or "well," and anēr (genitive andros), meaning "man." Its literal sense is therefore "good man." Roman writers rendered the Greek name in Latin as Evander, and that Latinized form is the one that passed into English. The same two elements also appear in other Greek compounds such as Alexander and Andreas, though those names have their own separate histories. In Portuguese and Italian, the related form Evandro is more familiar.
Evander Name History & Origins
In Greek myth, Evander was an Arcadian hero, described as a son of Hermes by a nymph; Roman tradition instead names the prophetic nymph Carmenta as his mother. He was said to have led a colony from Arcadia to Italy and settled at Pallanteum on the Palatine Hill, on the ground where Rome later grew. In the Aeneid, Virgil makes him the host and ally of Aeneas in the war against the Rutulians and their king Turnus, and tells how Evander's son Pallas was killed in that fighting. Roman writers, including Livy and Dionysius of Halicarnassus, credit Evander with bringing Greek laws, writing, and religious customs to Italy. These are literary and traditional accounts rather than documented history.
Because the name appears in Greek and Latin literature, it was known in the ancient Mediterranean world, and the Latinized form Evander entered English through that route. It has never been a common English given name. Bearers include the 19th-century American officers Evander McNair and Evander M. Law, and the American boxer Evander Holyfield.
