What Does the Name Evan Mean?
Evan is an English form of the Welsh personal name Ifan (also Ieuan), which corresponds to John. The name goes back through Latin Iohannes and Greek Ioannes to Hebrew Yochanan, commonly explained as "Yahweh is gracious" or "God is gracious." The Hebrew elements are often identified as a shortened form of the divine name and the root chanan, "to be gracious." The meaning is a statement about God's favor, not a description of the bearer. Some popular name lists give "young warrior" as a meaning, but this is not the usual etymology and appears to come from confusion with other Celtic names such as Ewan or Owen.
Evan Name History & Origins
The name entered English through Wales. In medieval Wales, the biblical name John was adopted in several native forms, including Ieuan, Ifan, and Iefan. These Welsh forms appear in medieval Welsh records. The English spelling Evan developed as an anglicization of these Welsh forms. In the Welsh forms spelled with f, such as Ifan and Iefan, the f has the sound of English v; this helps explain the v in Evan. The given name also gave rise to the surname Evans, a patronymic formed with the English genitive ending -s.
Evan is not the same as the English name John, though both descend from Hebrew Yochanan. Nor is it the same as the Scottish name Ewan or the Welsh name Owen, which have different origins. The name appears as the title character of George Meredith's 1861 novel Evan Harrington.
