What Does the Name Emilia Mean?
Emilia comes from the Latin feminine name Aemilia, the feminine form of the Roman family name Aemilius. The traditional explanation derives Aemilius from Latin aemulus, meaning 'rival' or 'emulating.' The derivation is not fully certain: the usual explanation connects Aemilius with aemulus, while another view suggests an Etruscan origin, which would leave the meaning uncertain. The sense 'rival' or 'emulating' is therefore a customary etymology rather than a securely documented translation.
Emilia Name History & Origins
The Latin Aemilia was the feminine form of Aemilius, the name of one of ancient Rome's oldest patrician families, the gens Aemilia. Roman women used the name, and it also appears in the Via Aemilia, the road built in 187 BC by the consul Marcus Aemilius Lepidus. The road's name survives in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna. Through Latin and the Romance languages, the name took forms such as Emilia in Italian and Spanish, Emília in Portuguese, and Émilie in French. The same Latin root produced the English Emily, while Emilia developed as a separate form in Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, and other European languages.
In English, Emilia appears as a character in Shakespeare's Othello, written about 1603 - 1604, where she is the wife of Iago. That literary use is later than the name's Roman and medieval history. Emilia has remained in use in English-speaking countries, and it is sometimes confused with Amelia, a name of Germanic origin rather than Latin.
