What Does the Name Emeryk Mean?

Emeryk is a Polish masculine name of Germanic origin. It corresponds to the German name Emmerich and goes back to the Old High German two-part name Amalrīh (also recorded as Amalric), formed from amal, "work, labor," and rīhhi, "ruler, powerful." Read literally, the compound describes an "industrious ruler" or a "ruler in work."

Haimirīh, from haim, "home," plus rīhhi, "ruler." That compound is the source of the English name Henry. The overlap arises because Saint Emeric of Hungary, whose name appears in Latin as Emericus and in Polish as Emeryk, is sometimes treated as a form of Henry. Which first element truly stands behind the saint's name, and behind Polish Emeryk, is not settled, so the "work" derivation is best described as the usual one rather than the only one.

Emeryk Name History & Origins

The Germanic name behind Emeryk was built from two elements common in early Germanic personal names. Old High German Amalrīh passed through Middle High German forms such as Emelrich and became the modern German Emmerich. Its second element, rīhhi, "ruler, power," is the same one that appears in names of the Richard, Frederick, and Henry type; the first element is not shared with those names.

In Poland the name took hold through the cult of Saint Emeric of Hungary (about 1007 - 1031), son of King Stephen I. The saint's Latin name was Emericus, and Polish church usage and calendars render it as Emeryk. His feast falls on November 4, and that date became the name's traditional Polish name day. In Hungarian the same saint is called Imre, a name that is often identified with Henry, so the Polish form stands where two naming traditions meet.

Later Polish use of the name is documented in the person of Emeryk Hutten-Czapski (1828 - 1896), a count, numismatist, and collector whose holdings formed the basis of the museum bearing his name in Kraków. Related forms in other languages include German Emmerich and Czech Emerich.
