What Does the Name Emelly Mean?
Emelly is a respelled form of Emily, and it carries the meaning traditionally given to that name: "rival" or "one who strives to equal." Emily, together with its close relatives Emilie and Emilia, comes from the Latin Aemilia, the feminine form of the Roman family name Aemilius. Latin writers connected Aemilius with the adjective aemulus, meaning "rival" or "emulating," and that link is the usual source of the name's meaning. The deeper origin of the Roman family name itself is not known, so the derivation from aemulus is the standard explanation rather than a certainty. The spelling Emelly changes only the ending, substituting -elly for -ily while keeping the same pronunciation.
Emelly Name History & Origins
The name behind Emelly goes back to the Roman family name Aemilius, whose feminine form Aemilia was used as a given name by women of that gens. Aemilia Tertia, the wife of Scipio Africanus, and Aemilia Paulla, the mother of the Gracchi brothers, are among the Roman women who bore it. As the name passed into the languages of medieval and early modern Europe, it took forms such as French Émilie, Italian and Spanish Emilia, German Emilie, and English Emily.
In English the name appears in literature as Emelye in Chaucer's Knight's Tale, a character adapted from Boccaccio's Emilia, but this is a literary use rather than evidence of common given-name use at that time. The modern English form Emily was established in use by the 18th century and became a common given name in the 19th century in Britain and North America. Emelly belongs to the group of variant spellings of the name that circulate in English-speaking countries, along with Emilee and Emelie; the -elly ending produces the same three syllables as the standard spelling.
