What Does the Name Elora Mean?

Elora is a feminine given name used in English, and no single origin is securely documented for it. It is most often treated as a shortened or variant form of Elnora, which is itself a variant of Eleanora, a form of Eleanor - a name that entered English from Old French and whose own etymology is disputed. A separate explanation connects Elora to the Hebrew name Eliora, built from El ("God") and or ("light"), giving "God is my light." These two lines of origin are independent, and because neither is firmly attested for Elora itself, its meaning is best described as uncertain.

Elora Name History & Origins

Elora follows the shape of a group of English feminine names ending in -ora, among them Eleanora, Elnora, Lenora, Flora, and Cora. Elnora and Eleanora have been in use in the English-speaking world since at least the 19th century, and shorter forms ending in -ora were made from them. Elora is generally placed in that family, although its own early use is not well documented.

A distinct Hebrew name, Eliora, is spelled and pronounced similarly and means "God is my light"; some writers therefore treat Elora as an English rendering of it. Elara, a name from Greek myth, looks close to Elora but is not related to it.

The name became familiar to a wide audience through Elora Danan, the infant princess in the 1988 fantasy film Willow. That is a well-known literary use of the name rather than evidence of its origin, and it should not be confused with the name's earliest appearance in records.
