What Does the Name Elody Mean?
Elody is an English spelling of the French name Élodie, a feminine name of Germanic origin. It is usually traced to the Germanic Alodia, a compound whose first element is commonly read as "other, foreign" and whose second element means "wealth, riches"; some reference works instead read the first element as "all," giving "all wealth." Because the original compound is not securely documented, the precise meaning of the name is uncertain.
A separate and less accepted suggestion connects Élodie to the Greek name Heliodora, the feminine of Heliodoros, "gift of the sun" (helios "sun" plus doron "gift"). The resemblance between the two names is likely coincidental, and most accounts treat the Germanic derivation as the stronger one.
Elody Name History & Origins
A well-known early bearer of the name is Saint Alodia, a Christian girl martyred at Huesca, in what is now Spain, in 851, together with her sister Nunilo. Their veneration spread through the medieval church, and the Latin form Alodia is recorded in that period. The name is Germanic in form, and its appearance in the Iberian Peninsula is generally linked to the Visigothic presence there.
From Latin and Romance use the name passed into French as Élodie, with the characteristic French final -ie and written accent. It has long been used in French-speaking regions, and Spanish preserves a related form, Elodia. The English forms Elodie and Elody derive from the French name; the spelling without an accent reflects English spelling habits.
Elody is not related to the Hungarian masculine name Előd, which is a distinct name with its own separate origin.
