What Does the Name Ellijah Mean?

Ellijah is a spelling variant of Elijah, a name from the Hebrew Bible. It goes back to the Hebrew ʾĔlīyāhū (אֱלִיָּהוּ), formed from ʾel, the common Semitic word for deity ("God"), and yāhū, a shortened form of the divine name YHWH. The literal sense is "My God is Yahweh." A shorter Hebrew form, ʾĔlīyāh (אֱלִיָּה), also occurs and yields the closely related reading "Yah is my God." The doubled l in Ellijah is an English spelling choice; it does not reflect a different Hebrew root and does not change the meaning.

Ellijah Name History & Origins

The name's history begins with the prophet Elijah, the central figure of the Elijah stories in the Books of Kings (1 Kings 17 - 2 Kings 2), who opposes the worship of Baal under King Ahab and is taken up to heaven in a whirlwind. Through that prophet the name entered Jewish usage and later Christian naming tradition; in the New Testament, Elijah appears at the Transfiguration, and John the Baptist is described in terms of Elijah's expected return.

In the Greek Septuagint and the Greek New Testament the name appears as Ēlias (Ἠλίας), which passed into Latin as Elias. English Bibles traditionally carried two forms: Elijah in the Old Testament, following the Hebrew, and Elias in the New Testament, following the Greek and Latin. The King James Bible of 1611 uses both in that way. The Latin Elias is also the source of the given name and surname Ellis.

Ellijah shares the origin of Elijah rather than having a separate etymology of its own. It uses the same Hebrew-derived elements with the opening El- written with a doubled consonant, a pattern found in other respelled El- names in English-speaking countries.
