What Does the Name Eliyah Mean?
Eliyah is a Hebrew name meaning "My God is Yahweh." It is the shorter form of the biblical name Eliyahu (אֱלִיָּהוּ), usually rendered in English as Elijah. The name joins El (אֵל), a Hebrew word for God, to Yah (יָה), an abbreviated form of YHWH, the four-letter name of the God of Israel. The i that links the two parts is the first-person possessive ending, giving the sense "my God."
Because the divine element is shortened and the parts can be read in more than one order, some reference works explain the name as "Yahweh is God." The traditional rendering, and the one most often given, is "My God is Yahweh."
Eliyah Name History & Origins
The name appears in the Hebrew Bible in two forms. The prophet Elijah, who opposed King Ahab and the worship of Baal in the northern kingdom of Israel, is called אֱלִיָּהוּ (Eliyahu) in the books of Kings. The shorter form אֵלִיָּה (Eliyah) appears in the closing verses of Malachi, where God promises to send "Eliyah the prophet" before the great and terrible day of the LORD. The shorter form also names minor figures in the Hebrew text: a Benjaminite in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles and one of the men listed in Ezra as having married a foreign wife.
In the Greek translation of the Hebrew scriptures, the Septuagint, the name took the form Elias (Ἠλίας), and this is the form used in the New Testament. Latin kept Elias, and most European languages adopted the name in that shape. The English spelling Elijah comes from a later transliteration directly from Hebrew. The spelling Eliyah stays close to the Hebrew shorter form; it is used as a given name by Hebrew speakers in Israel and appears in English-speaking countries as an alternative spelling of the biblical name.
The name is related to the Arabic form Ilyas (إِلْيَاس), the prophet mentioned in the Quran.
