What Does the Name Elezar Mean?
Elezar is a variant spelling of the biblical name Eleazar, which means "God has helped." It comes from Hebrew אֶלְעָזָר (Elʿazar), formed from two elements: ʾel, the Hebrew word for "God," and a verb form from the root ʿ-z-r, "to help," conventionally rendered "he has helped." Read literally, the name is a brief statement that God has given help.
Eleazar is a different name from the similar-looking Eliezer (אֱלִיעֶזֶר), which means "my God is help" and uses a different second element, ʿezer, "help." The two names resemble each other in English letters but are distinct in Hebrew.
Elezar Name History & Origins
Eleazar is an old Hebrew name. In the Hebrew Bible it belongs to Eleazar, a son of Aaron, who succeeded his father as high priest (Numbers 20), and it recurs among priests and Levites, including in the genealogy of Jesus at Matthew 1:15. It was in use among Jews in the Second Temple period, and Greek-speaking writers used the form Ἐλεάζαρος (Eleazaros), which appears in the Septuagint and in Josephus. The shorter Greek name Λάζαρος (Lazaros), the source of English Lazarus, is generally explained as a clipping of Eleazaros.
The spelling Elezar is a simplified transliteration of the same name; Eleazar is the form normally found in English Bibles and reference works, while Elezar turns up mainly as a personal-name spelling. In Spanish and Portuguese, Eleazar has long been a given name, and the loss of the second a in Elezar reflects spelling variation rather than a separate origin or meaning.
