What Does the Name Eizan Mean?

Eizan is a Japanese name meaning "wisdom mountain." Its usual spelling is 叡山: 叡 (ei), "wisdom" or "imperial insight," joined to 山, "mountain," which is read zan in compounds (the Sino-Japanese reading of 山 is san, voiced to zan after a preceding element). Written this way, Eizan is a short name for Mount Hiei (比叡山, Hieizan) near Kyoto. Japanese names are usually chosen character by character, so the same sound appears with other spellings that change the meaning, such as 英山 "excellent mountain," 栄山 "prosperous mountain," or 永山 "eternal mountain." The meaning follows the characters a bearer uses, not the sound alone, so no single meaning fits every person named Eizan.

Eizan Name History & Origins

Eizan is recorded first as a place name. Mount Hiei, northeast of Kyoto, carries the fuller name Hieizan (比叡山) and is also called simply Eizan (叡山). The monk Saichō founded the temple Enryaku-ji on the mountain in 788, and it became the headquarters of the Tendai school of Buddhism. Because of that monastic center, 叡山 was used in Buddhist writing and in general reference for the mountain, and the reading Eizan traveled with the name. As a personal name, Eizan follows the ordinary Japanese practice of naming from meaningful language elements rather than from an inherited stock of given names, and it is written either with 叡山 or with a substitute ei character plus 山. In the Edo period, the ukiyo-e designer Kikukawa Eizan (1787 - 1867) used Eizan (英山, "excellent mountain") as his art name while producing prints of courtesans and beauties, showing the same sound in a different character combination.
