What Does the Name Edge Mean?
Edge is an English name derived from the Old English word ecg, meaning 'edge, point, or sword edge'. The same Old English word could refer to the sharp side of a blade, a border or boundary, or a ridge or escarpment in the landscape. The modern English word edge descends from ecg, and the personal name Edge is identical in form to that word. As a name, Edge is usually a transferred use of the English surname Edge rather than a distinct ancient given name. The surname has more than one possible origin: it can be topographic, for someone who lived at the edge of a settlement or on a ridge; habitational, from a place named Edge; or occasionally from the Old English personal name element Ecg 'sword', which appears in compound names such as Ecgberht. Because the same surname form can arise from different sources, the exact derivation of any one family's name is often uncertain.
Edge Name History & Origins
The word behind the name, Old English ecg, is recorded with the senses 'edge, point, sword'. In Middle English it appears as egge. English surnames formed from this word date to the medieval period, when hereditary surnames became common. The surname Edge can be topographic, for someone who lived at the edge of a settlement or on a ridge, or habitational, from a place named Edge. It is found in England and has been carried to other English-speaking countries through migration.
As a given name, Edge is used occasionally in the modern English-speaking world, where it belongs to the broad category of surname names and word names. The name has also been used as a stage name by the musician The Edge and the professional wrestler Edge, but these are modern public uses and do not change the name's origin as an English word and surname.
