What Does the Name Eda Mean?

Eda has two unrelated origins. In Turkish, eda is a noun meaning "manner, comportment, grace," and it is used as a feminine given name with that sense. In English and other Germanic languages, Eda is a short form of Edith, from Old English Ēadgȳð, which joins ēad, "wealth, prosperity," to gȳð, "battle, war," and is usually translated "prosperous in war" or "rich in war." A short form like Eda keeps the "wealth" element and drops the "battle" element. Eda can also shorten other names built on the same first element, such as Edwina. The Turkish name and the Germanic short form look alike only by coincidence.

Eda Name History & Origins

The Turkish name Eda goes back to the Turkish common noun eda, which Ottoman Turkish borrowed from Arabic adāʾ (أداء), originally "performance, execution, discharge." In Turkish the word came to mean a way of carrying oneself, and from there grace or charm. Eda is used as a female given name in Turkey.

In England, Eda appears in the Middle Ages as a shortened form of Edith. Edith was borne by St. Edith of Wilton (about 961 - 984), a daughter of King Edgar, and by Queen Edith, the wife of Edward the Confessor, in the eleventh century. Medieval English records contain shortened and altered forms of the name, including Eda. The element ēad also appears in other Old English names, among them Edgar, Edward, and Edwin. In later English use, Eda has been given both as a nickname for Edith and as a name in its own right.
