What Does the Name Eben Mean?

Eben is a short form of the biblical name Ebenezer, which comes from Hebrew. The Hebrew phrase Eben ha-ʿezer combines ʾeben, "stone," with ʿezer, "help," so the literal sense is "stone of help." In the First Book of Samuel, the prophet Samuel sets up a stone between Mizpah and Shen and names it Eben-ezer, saying, "Thus far the Lord has helped us." The name therefore refers to a memorial stone rather than describing a person directly. As a given name, Eben carries the same meaning as its parent name, Ebenezer; it is not a separate Hebrew word with an unrelated sense.

Eben Name History & Origins

Ebenezer entered English use in the 17th century, when English Puritans favored Old Testament names drawn directly from Hebrew scripture. The short form Eben developed alongside it as a familiar spoken form. In the 19th century, Charles Dickens gave the name Ebenezer to the miser in A Christmas Carol (1843), and the character's first name became widely recognizable; the clipped form Eben is attested as a nickname for Ebenezer but is not tied to that story alone.

Eben is also used as a given name in the Netherlands and among Afrikaans speakers in South Africa, where it likewise derives from Ebenezer (Afrikaans Ebeneser). In English-speaking countries it appears both as a standalone given name and as a short form. It is distinct from the surname Eben and from similarly spelled names of other origins.
