What Does the Name Ean Mean?
Ean is a Manx Gaelic form of John, and it carries the same meaning: "God is gracious" - literally, "Yahweh has shown favor." The name goes back to the Hebrew Yochanan (יוֹחָנָן), built from a short form of the divine name plus the verb chanan, "to be gracious." It passed into Greek as Ioannes and Latin as Ioannes, then into each European language in its own form. In Manx, the Gaelic speech of the Isle of Man, that form is Ean, the counterpart of Irish Eoin and Scottish Gaelic Iain (also written Eòin).
One unrelated look-alike is worth separating out. The Old English word ēan meant "lamb" and appears as the first element of Anglo-Saxon compound names such as Eanred and Eanfrith. That element is a different word with a different origin, and it is not the source of the given name Ean.
Ean Name History & Origins
Manx is a Goidelic Celtic language that took shape on the Isle of Man from the Old Irish carried there by Gaelic-speaking settlers. In Manx, the everyday and biblical form of John was Ean. It is the form used in the Manx translation of the Bible, where John the Baptist appears as Ean Bashtey and the Gospel of John is the Sushtal liorish Ean. The name's place in Manx-speaking families rested on the same Christian foundations that made John one of the most widespread names in medieval and early modern Europe: the veneration of John the Baptist and John the Apostle.
Anglicized Manx records and families who left the Isle of Man carried the spelling into English usage. In modern English, Ean is also used as a respelling of Ian, the Scottish Gaelic form of John, and the two are pronounced alike in many accents, so uses of the two names cannot always be told apart. As Manx ceased to be a community language in the 19th and 20th centuries, the name has been kept alive mainly by English speakers rather than by Manx speakers.
