The best known of the places is Dutton in Cheshire, recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 as Duntune. A smaller Dutton in Lancashire and a few other English settlements share the name. The surname grew out of these places: a man who moved away from Dutton could be identified by it, and the name was then handed down within his family. The Duttons of Dutton, an old Cheshire landholding family, were established at the place by the twelfth century and later divided into branches in other counties.
As a first name, Dutton has never been common. It belongs to the long English practice of turning family surnames into given names, a habit that widened from the seventeenth century and especially in the nineteenth, when a mother's or grandmother's maiden name was often given to a child.
The surname is also borne by the ranching family at the center of the American television series Yellowstone (2018 - 2024). That is a recent fictional use and much later than the name's medieval origin as a place name.
