What Does the Name Duran Mean?
Duran is a surname and, less often, a given name. It is usually explained as coming from the Old French word durant, the present participle of durer, "to last, to hold out," and therefore meaning "enduring" or "lasting." The French verb goes back to Latin durare, "to endure, to last," which is formed from durus, "hard." The literal sense of the word is simply "enduring"; the looser sense of "steadfast" is a later, figurative reading rather than the dictionary meaning.
In medieval France Durand was used as a personal name, and the family names of France, Spain, and England are generally traced to that personal name rather than to the common word by itself. The Spanish form is written Durán with an accent, and it is usually treated as a patronymic - a name taken from a father's or ancestor's given name. French has Durand and Durant; English has Durant, Durrant, and the shortened Duran. A Germanic origin for the medieval personal name has also been suggested, but the Old French explanation is the one most often given, and the deeper origin of the personal name is not fully settled.
Duran Name History & Origins
The pieces behind the name are Latin: durus, "hard," produced durare, "to last, to endure," which passed into Old French as durer. Its present participle, durant, was used as a nickname and then as a personal name in medieval France. Durand was common there as a man's name.
After the Norman Conquest of 1066, the personal name Durand was carried into England, where it appears in medieval records and gave rise to the surnames Durand, Durant, Durrant, and the shortened Duran. In the Iberian Peninsula the same stock of medieval names produced the surname Durán, written with an accent and common in Spain and Spanish-speaking Latin America; it also appears in the Philippines, where Spanish surnames are widespread. As a first name, Duran is uncommon and is used mainly alongside the much more frequent surname.
Two modern uses are well known. Roberto Durán of Panama was a champion boxer, whose surname follows the Spanish spelling. The English band name Duran Duran was taken from a character, Durand Durand, in the 1968 film Barbarella; this is a twentieth-century borrowing of the surname, not the name's origin. The city of Durán in Ecuador is a separate place name.
