What Does the Name Dunia Mean?

Dunia comes from two unrelated names. The first is Arabic: dunyā (دُنْيا) means "the world" - the earthly, temporal world, as opposed to al-ākhirah, the life to come. The word is the feminine form of the adjective adnā, "nearer" or "lower," from the root d-n-w; the underlying sense is of what is close at hand and lower than the spiritual realm. As a personal name it is used in Arabic-speaking countries, and the same word serves as a name in Turkish (Dünya), Persian, Urdu, Indonesian, Malay, and Swahili, where it simply means "world."

The second is Slavic. Dunia - also spelled Dunya - is a familiar short form of the Russian Yevdokiya (Евдокия), also rendered Avdotya, which goes back to the Greek Eudokia. That Greek name joins eu, "good," with dokeō, "to seem" or "to think," and is customarily translated "good will" or "good repute." The Arabic and Slavic names look alike but have separate origins, and the resemblance between them is coincidental.

Dunia Name History & Origins

The Arabic dunyā appears throughout the Quran, often in the phrase al-ḥayāt al-dunyā, "the life of this world," set against the life to come. Because it names the world people actually live in, it was taken up as a girl's name in Arabic-speaking lands and spread with the Arabic language and with Islam into Turkish, Persian, Urdu, Indonesian, Malay, and Swahili. In Indonesian, Malay, and Swahili it remains the ordinary word for "world" as well as a given name.

The Slavic name has its own line of descent. In Russian, Дуня (Dunya) is an everyday short form of Евдокия (Yevdokiya), with the affectionate Dunyasha as a further step; Ukrainian shows the same pattern. The full name traces to the Greek Eudokia, which spread through the Byzantine world and was borne by several early saints, including a martyr venerated in the Orthodox Church. Short forms such as Dunya then passed into ordinary family use.

In the nineteenth century the Russian short form became familiar to readers outside Russia through fiction: in Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment (1866), Raskolnikov's sister Avdotya Romanovna is called Dunya throughout, and Chekhov's The Cherry Orchard (1904) includes a maid named Dunyasha. These are literary uses of a long-established diminutive, not the origin of the name.
