What Does the Name Dreux Mean?

Dreux is a French name taken from the town of Dreux in northern France, and the town's name goes back to the Gaulish tribal name Durocasses, the Gallic people who held that territory and whose main settlement stood on the site.

The first element, Celtic duro-, meant "fort" or "stronghold," and it appears in other ancient names, such as Durocortorum, the Roman name of Reims. The second element, casses, recurs in several Gaulish tribal names - Baiocasses, Viducasses, Tricasses - but its own sense is disputed, so the compound is usually glossed loosely as "fort of the Durocasses" rather than translated word for word.

Dreux is also found as a medieval French personal name, often identified with the Germanic name Drogo (also Drogon); that strand is separate in origin from the place name.

Dreux Name History & Origins

The Gallic tribe called Durocasses lived in the area of the present Eure-et-Loir department, and their chief town was recorded in Roman times as Durocasses (also Durocassium). The settlement kept the name through the Middle Ages in the French form Dreux.

In the twelfth century the town gave its title to a county, and the Capetian counts of Dreux formed a cadet branch of the French royal house: Robert I, Count of Dreux, was a younger son of King Louis VI. The line later supplied rulers of Brittany, including Pierre Mauclerc.

As a personal name, Dreux appears in medieval France both as a form of the Germanic Drogo and as a name drawn from the town. In English-speaking use it is found chiefly as a surname, carried by French families and by their descendants in North America, and it also appears as a given name.
