What Does the Name Dovey Mean?
Dovey is an English name meaning "little dove." It is formed from the Middle English word for the bird, dove, plus the diminutive ending -y, which adds the sense "small" or "dear." The bird word descends from Old English dūfe, which referred specifically to the female bird (the male was a culfre, the source of the rare modern word culver). The same Germanic root produced Dutch duif and German Taube.
The name is chiefly a surname used as a first name. As an English surname, Dovey is usually a pet form of Dove, itself a nickname for a mild or peaceable person, or an occupational-style name for someone who tended doves. A separate Welsh surname, Dovey, is taken from the River Dovey in western Wales, known in Welsh as Afon Dyfi; the meaning of the river name Dyfi is not securely established, so that strand of the name's sense stays uncertain. Dovey is also sometimes treated as a pet form of the given name Dove itself, and it is close to the related diminutive Dovie.
Dovey Name History & Origins
Dovey first appears as a surname. English surnames of this kind - a common word for an animal or object plus the familiar ending -y - took shape in the later Middle Ages, and Dovey belongs to that group alongside names such as Dove and the diminutive Dobie. In Wales, the surname Dovey is tied to the River Dovey, the English form of Afon Dyfi, which flows into Cardigan Bay; families living near that river adopted the place name as a surname.
Dovey has been used as a girl's given name mainly in the United States, particularly in the South, following the widespread American habit of passing a family surname down as a first name. It also occurs as a pet form of Dove. The civil rights lawyer and ordained minister Dovey Johnson Roundtree (1914 - 2018), who was named for an older relative, is a well-known bearer of the name.
