What Does the Name Dion Mean?

Dion is a masculine name of ancient Greek origin. It comes from the Greek name Δίων (Dion), which is usually connected with Διός (Dios), the genitive form of Ζεύς (Zeus). In that derivation the name means "of Zeus" or "belonging to Zeus." A separate tradition treats Dion as a short form of Διονύσιος (Dionysios, Latin Dionysius), a name built from Dionysos, the Greek god of wine. Under that derivation the sense is "of Dionysos" or "devoted to Dionysos." Because the ancient Greek name Dion existed in its own right, the exact relationship between Δίων and Διονύσιος is not always clear. The older and more direct etymology is "of Zeus"; the Dionysian explanation is a later association that overlaps with it.

Dion Name History & Origins

The name Dion was used in the ancient Greek world. Its best-known early bearer was Dion of Syracuse (c. 408 - 354 BC), a Syracusan statesman, philosopher, and friend of Plato. He was related by marriage to the ruling Dionysius family of Syracuse and tried to turn the city's government toward Plato's political ideas; he was assassinated in 354 BC. The Greek historian Cassius Dio, also called Dio Cassius (c. 155 - 235 AD), bore the same name in its Greek form Δίων. He was a Roman senator who wrote a history of Rome in Greek, and his name shows the continued use of Dion in the Greek-speaking Roman world.

From Greek, the related name Διονύσιος (Dionysios) passed into Latin as Dionysius and later became the English name Dennis. Dion is sometimes treated as a short form of that longer name, but it also appears as an independent Greek name. In modern English, Dion is used as a masculine given name; it is also found as a surname, though surname use has its own family history. The American singer Dion DiMucci (born 1939) is a well-known modern bearer of the given name.
