What Does the Name Dino Mean?
Dino is mainly a shortened name rather than one with a single root meaning. In Italian it is a familiar form of masculine names that end in the diminutive suffix -dino, above all Bernardino, itself a diminutive of Bernardo. The Italian ending -ino is a diminutive meaning "little," and Dino keeps that sense when it stands alone as a given name.
A separate tradition exists in Greek, where Dinos (Ντίνος) is a short form of Konstantinos and similar long names. The Italian and Greek names look alike but are not derived from each other.
Dino Name History & Origins
Dino comes from the Italian habit of clipping longer given names. Names ending in -dino, such as Bernardino, Gherardino, and Riccardino, were shortened in everyday speech to Dino, and the short form came to be used on its own as a masculine given name in Italy.
The Greek form Dinos follows a comparable pattern, formed from longer names such as Konstantinos, and it too is used as an independent given name in Greece.
Italian emigration spread the name to other countries. In the United States, Dino is especially associated with Italian American families: the singer and actor Dean Martin was born Dino Paul Crocetti in Steubenville, Ohio, in 1917. Other bearers include the writer Dino Buzzati, the goalkeeper Dino Zoff, and the film producer Dino De Laurentiis.
The name is also used in Croatia, Slovenia, Serbia, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
